Environmental groups have application to the Supreme Court

Environmental organizations are asking the Supreme Court the immediate stoppage of Pascua-Lama

Environmental organizations Friends of the Earth Argentina, Greenpeace, Environment and Natural Resources Foundation, the Association of Environmental Law in Argentina and Dialogue for the Environment, filed a complaint with the Supreme Court's Office and requested an order for the immediate cessation of binational mining project activities "Pascua Lama" (San Juan), pursuant to the Law on Protection of glaciers, and provided the "immediate suspension" of the precautionary measures to prevent their implementation in the province.

The lawsuit seeks to ensure the full observance of the Law on Protection of Glaciers.

According to the lawsuit, the venture mining company Barrick Gold violates prohibition in Article 6 of the Law on Minimum Standards for Protecting the Environment Glaciers and Periglacial (No. 26639) and is developing its activities on glaciers and periglacial environment.

The lawsuit also asks that provided "the immediate suspension " precautionary measures ordered by a federal court in San Juan "which impede the implementation in the province of the key articles of the rule in the province.

The complaint also seeks to ensure the full observance of the Law on Protection of glaciers, and ordering the immediate realization national inventory of glaciers and the environmental audit that sets the standard for entrepreneurship Pascua-Lama. On the other hand, the court filing asks for an order requiring the defendants (the National Government, the Province of San Juan and the company Barrick Gold and its subsidiaries) to carry out drainage works and reconstruction of the environment in the area where the mining project, for environmental damage already caused.
